Harmison 'needed by England'

England need an in-form Steve Harmison to lead their pace attack if they are to reclaim their place as one of the world's best Test sides, according to Durham chief executive David Harker.

Harmison has taken 41 first-class wickets this summer and was due to lead Durham's attack against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge today after being left out of the Third Test.

Harker said: "Steve has bowled extremely well for us and we've seen enough of him this year to know it will be difficult for England to win without him." Stuart Broad, who has also been left out of the England XI, was hanging on in case there was a late injury mishap at Edgbaston before heading to Trent Bridge to play for Notts alongside another England discard, Darren Pattinson.

Notts director of cricket Mick Newell said: "Stuart's future in the England team is beyond doubt and it won't do him any harm to have some time with us."
