Harmison blows away Windies

England created cricket history yesterday when they dismissed the West Indies for 47 - their lowest-ever Test score - to earn one of their greatest victories and set this Caribbean series alight.

Pace bowler Steve Harmison catapulted his name among the cricketing greats with an unplayable spell at Sabina Park that earned him the incredible figures of seven for 12 to set up an emphatic and unexpected 10-wicket first Test victory.

Brian Lara's men were blown away in just under two hours of incredible action on the fourth morning of an enthralling Test, England making amends for so many Caribbean nightmares by inflicting the ignominy on their hosts of a score four runs short of their worst ever - 51 against Australia in Trinidad in 1999 - and seven short of the 54 they managed at Lord's in 2000 against an inspired Andrew Caddick.

'I'm speechless,' said an emotional Harmison, who spent seven weeks this winter training with his Newcastle football heroes to improve his suspect fitness. 'Three tough days of Test cricket and then this. I have worked very hard and I'm very grateful to Newcastle for all the help they have given me.'

Harmison, 25, revealed that he reduced his pace slightly in the second innings to concentrate on the right length, a move that earned him his second Man of the Match award, following his nine wickets against Bangladesh in October, the last Test he played before a back injury ruled him out of the subsequent tour of Sri Lanka.

Triumphant England captain Michael Vaughan said: 'He took nine wickets in Dhaka and now nine in the match here, so he will have to do it every time.
