Hands off Jose

Chelsea have inserted a handsoff clause worth more than £5million into Jose Mourinho's new contract to try to keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2010.

The Portuguese head coach finally put pen to paper yesterday on his new five-year deal, which is worth an astonishing £5.2m a year.

The real value of the contract could be as much as double that if he can build on his remarkable first season in England.

Following the disappointment of Tuesday's European Cup semi-final exit against Liverpool, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is determined to win football's biggest prize next season.

He wants to keep Mourinho for the long term and so has acted to prevent the talented young manager being poached.

Mourinho's contract contains a clause stipulating that his next employers must pay Chelsea the value of his contract for a year should he leave within the next five years.
