Hammers keen on Teddy

Teddy Sheringham is poised to join West Ham United's bid to regain their Premiership place next season.

The former England striker, who is out of contract after a year at Portsmouth, has had talks at Upton Park but remains undecided about his future.

He has also been approached by Coventry City whose manager Peter Reid admitted that the Sky Blues were one of a number of interested clubs.

West Ham boss Alan Pardew believes that the 38-year-old's experience could prove crucial in West Ham's bid for promotion this season and the squad has a striking vacancy left by David Connolly.

The former Wimbledon forward is set to join Leicester for £500,000 leaving Pardew with only two recognised goalscorers in Bobby Zamora and Marlon Harewood. Both players are in their early 20s and could benefit from a year learning from Sheringham.

Reid said: "Teddy would be a great signing but there is obviously interest from a number of other clubs and we will have to see how it progresses." Should the free transfer go through, West Ham would become Sheringham's third London club after Millwall and Tottenham.
