Gunners' fans paint town red

They may have got used to celebrations - three League titles in six years gives one a certain familiarity with the lyrics to We Are The Champions - but Arsenal fans proved they can still party with the best of them.

From the moment the final whistle signalled their Premiership triumph, Arsenal fans never stopped cheering. They started at White Hart Lane where a 2-2 draw against Tottenham meant Arsene Wenger's team had beaten their other London rivals Chelsea to the title.

They ended several hours later at Highbury, where anyone who could get their hands on a red shirt, a red flag - or just anything with the word Arsenal on it - was singing and cheering into the small hours.

No one was going home in a hurry, thanks to the warm weather. But one had the impression that if it had been raining they would still have been out there. Fathers lifted their sons onto their shoulders to get a better view as fans hugged each other and drivers blew their car horns. "This is the happiest day of my life," said Mick Gedge, 69. "To win the league at White Hart Lane will go down as one of the most memorable matches I've ever seen."

James White, 29, who had travelled from Edinburgh, declared: "I'm in heaven, I'm never going to forget this."

The players celebrated at the annual Professional Footballers' Association awards where Thierry Henry was named the players' player of the year. He arrived at the Grosvenor House hotel just after 10pm and was one of the first to leave, just before midnight.
