Reid said: 'It was a pressure game and I knew I would get a performance from the play-ers. They didn't let me down. We deserved the three points and Kevin was outstanding again. I think Peter Schmeichel must have a personal grudge against him.' For Villa boss John Gregory it is now just one win in 11 games for the one-time Premiership leaders. The last time they won away was at Southampton in September.
He was upset his side had thrown away another chance to rediscover their winning touch following Ian Taylor's opener in the 59th minute.
Gregory said: 'I thought we had weathered the storm. They threw absolutely everything at us and we dealt with it comfortably. They didn't really look like scoring.'
Sunderland goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen, Schmeichel's successor in the Denmark team, saw the old master turn in a world class display to defy Sunderland until Thome's 86th minute header from Julio Arca's free-kick curled beyond him.
Sorensen, himself, was largely redundant until he was exposed by Darius Vassell's fine centre which Taylor powered home.
