Gough has done a good job for England in the current one-day series and, as always, his presence has been well received in the dressing room. But his knee is being patched up between every match, and there is a vast difference between bowling 10 overs in the NatWest triangular series and pounding in for two days on a flat pitch in a Test match. He urgently needs the chance to play a championship match to press his claim and, happily, Yorkshire are scheduled to face Durham in a game that ends on 18 July: the very day the selectors meet to pick England's squad for the first Test against South Africa.
