The winner was promptly described by champion jockey Kieren Fallon as "the most promising two-year-old colt I've ridden all season."

It was a result which punters will remember much more fondly than bookmakers, as Foss Way was a strong favourite at 11-8 and got the better of a stirring finish with the equally well-backed 8-1 shot Flying Express.

The runner-up caught a crack across the head from a rival jockey's whip as things got tight, but Fallon and the winning trainer John Gosden had no doubt that Foss Way scored on merit as they reflected on a race which has provided a springboard for some very smart two-year-olds over the years.

Fallon enthused over the way that Foss Way "really grabbed hold of the bridle when I asked him to quicken," while Gosden was thrilled to see his late decision to tackle the £15,000 contest pay off.

He said: "I deliberated until five to 10 on Monday over whether to run him in the Richmond Stakes or the Standard race but the Richmond was full of precocious sprinters ready to knock each other about.

"This looked a lovely race to help bring a promising young horse on, and we could be looking at one of the good races at York's August meeting or at the St Leger meeting at Doncaster next."
