England
England kept their cricket World Cup campaign alive with a remarkable performance to beat South Africa by six runs on Sunday. Andrew Strauss's side were bowled out for just 171, only for South Africa - at one stage 124-3 - to collapse to 165 all out. Stuart Broad was the hero with the ball, taking an astonishing 4-15 to help his team to victory.

BAD WEEK

Arsenal
The Gunners face the daunting task of playing Barcelona in Spain this week and their preparations for the Nou Camp clash have been far from perfect, as they drew 0-0 with Sunderland at the weekend.

"I am too disgusted to talk about it," barked Arsene Wenger of two key decisions that went against his side. One occurred in the 88th minute when Nicklas Bendtner released Andrey Arshavin who rounded the goalkeeper and scored what looked like the winning goal. Yet the assistant, Andy Garratt, ruled the Russian offside, despite replays confirming that Anton Ferdinand was playing the striker on-side. Also, Arshavin was denied a penalty when defender Titus Bramble appeared to push the forward.

Ireland
Ireland's cricketers crashed back to reality in Bangalore as they went down by five wickets to hosts India. After last week's astonishing triumph over England, Ireland were bowled out for 207, before making India toil to 210-5 with four overs to spare.

Stoke City
Stoke City also hold the accolade of quote of the weekend. Manager Tony Pulis said following his side's sixth successive away league defeat to West Ham: "We're getting our pants pulled down and our back-side slapped for every mistake." Pulis' touch of humour in the face in defeat is admirable.

Manchester United
Such was the anger emanating from Sir Alex Ferguson after his United side lost to Liverpool, he refused to speak with the media.

His side's disappointing defeat didn't help their title chances and, to make matters worse, midfielder Nani suffered a 'deep gash' in his leg after a tackle by Jamie Carragher, which could leave the Portuguese sidelines for some time.

United can recover from such a weekend, but their manager is certainly in the mire with the media.

Newcastle
Newcastle were afflicted with their second league defeat of 2011 on Saturday, falling 2-1 at home to Everton. "There's no lack of belief in our camp or any problem that I see other than the fact that we've probably got too many injuries to senior players who are important," reflected Alan Pardew, Newcastle's manager, who showed some perspective after the loss.
