England's rugby team England shrugged off their disappointment of losing to New Zealand the previous weekend by prevailing 35-18 over Australia on Saturday.
Chris Ashton was the star for the hosts, scoring a try in each half – the second a blistering 90m dash to the line which gave the crowd one of the greatest scoring spectacles seen at Twickenham, to help England to a brilliant victory. "It was a great Test match. We subdued them early on," reflected Martin Johnson, England's head coach.
Sebastian Vettel Vettel drove beautifully to take the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and his maiden Formula 1 world title. "It's been an incredible year," said Vettel. "We've always kept believing in the team and the car. And I have kept believing in myself."
BAD WEEK
Audley Harrison The boxer was embarrassed at the weekend after he was convincingly beaten by David Haye.
As Haye retained the WBA heavyweight title, the public's disappointment at Harrison's display was pithily assessed by Frank Warren, the boxing promoter, on Five Live's Sportsweek. "He did not try in any shape or form – that's a disgrace," Warren said.
Liverpool While it was a delightful weekend for Stoke, it was a depressing one for Liverpool.
Roy Hodgson's side had been on a run of four league games without defeat but their 2-0 loss sent them back to the bottom half of the table. "We've got to pick ourselves up," commented Hodgson after the game.
Manchester City City were left frustrated at the weekend, being held to a goalless draw with Birmingham – in fact, it was the third successive home match that Roberto Mancini's men had failed to score in. "We didn't have any real rhythm," reflected City coach David Platt.
Richard Stearman Fabio Capello was in attendance at Molineux, but the only English-qualified player he saw score was Stearman who netted an own goal.
The Wolves centre-half headed past his own goalkeeper in the very first minute to set opponents Bolton on their way to an eventual 3-2 success.
"I've never known anything like this at any level of football," said Stearman. "To concede inside the first minutes two games running at home is inexcusable and it's hard to take."
Fulham's away kit Observers wanting to discover the last time Fulham won away have to hark back to the opening day of last season. And, although Moussa Dembele almost cracked the cross bar with a fierce strike, the Cottagers drew with Newcastle at St James' Park at the weekend which extended that miserable run.
Perhaps it has something to do with their kit – Fulham have been sporting an unsavoury shade of green in recent away fixtures.
