Good week, bad week

We round up who had a superb weekend of sport, and those who were left tearing their hair out.

GOOD WEEK

Fernando TorresThe Spaniard struck twice to help Liverpool see off Chelsea 2-0 on Sunday. After finishing from close range following exquisite control of Dirk Kuyt's pass, the 26-year-old then beautifully curled in his second just before the break, making it seven goals in eight games against Chelsea and helping Liverpool to their third consecutive league victory. "We are playing with much more confidence now, much more self-belief," said Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson.

Andy Carroll
Carroll was the catalyst for Newcastle's precious 1-0 victory over the Gunners at the weekend. The tall talented striker scored with a header in the first half to give The Magpies their first win on Arsenal soil since December 2001.

Mario Balotelli
Balotelli may have seen red but he also put the Baggies' challenge to bed by netting twice as Manchester City won 2-0 at the Hawthorns. The Italian slid in Carlos Tevez's cross and then slammed in a second before kicking out at West Brom's Youssuf Mulumbu to earn a red card. The sending off marred an otherwise terrific display.

Murray brothers
Andy Murray and his brother Jamie took their first ATP Tour doubles title with a resilient victory in the Valencia Open final. The siblings saw off third seeds Mahesh Bhupathi of India and Max Mirnyi of Belarus 7-6 5-7 10-7. "It's a massive result," said Jamie. "We played well all week and had a lot of fun on the court together."

Brede Hangeland
The defender destroyed Aston Villa's hopes of obtaining three points by heading home late on to secure an important 1-1 draw for Fulham at Craven Cottage. Marc Albrighton's 41st-minute goal gave Villa the lead and they were ahead until five minutes into injury-time when Hangeland's header went in. "We kept going," said Fulham's manager Mark Hughes. "There's a lot of character and resilience in the squad."

BAD WEEK

England's rugby team
The All Blacks beat England 26-16 at Twickenham at the weekend. Tries from Hosea Gear and Kieran Read helped New Zealand prevail and England's head coach was left feeling ambivalent. "I am encouraged and frustrated," said Martin Johnson. "What cost us in the end was an inability to start at the same pace and tempo they did."
