Good week, bad week

We round up who had a superb weekend of sport, and those who were left burying their heads in the sand.

GOOD WEEK

Chelsea
Defender Branislav Ivanovic rose to the rescue to give Chelsea a 2-1 victory over Blackburn at Ewood Park. The Serbian's decisive intervention arrived six minutes from time, long after Benjani had given the hosts a surprise lead which Nicolas Anelka had countered with a sublime equaliser – his 11th goal in 15 games against Rovers. "We won an important game," reflected Chelsea's manager Carlo Ancelotti. "We are happy."

Clint Dempsey
Dempsey netted a delightful double to down Wigan on Saturday. The American's powerful header followed by his volleyed effort gave the Cottagers a 2-0 win, their first success in seven matches. "We were absolutely outstanding," enthused Mark Hughes.

Newcastle
The Magpies celebrated an emphatic 5-1 win in the Tyne-Wear derby. A hat-trick from Kevin Nolan and a brace from Shola Ameobi meant St. James' Park rocked to the roars of the ecstatic home support. Nolan's treble was particularly impressive. First he scored with an over-head kick then he stroked home an effort before forcing his header past Simon Mignolet, Sunderland's goalkeeper.

Alex Song
The midfielder was the eventual star for Arsenal as his last-gasp goal gave the Gunners a 1-0 win over West Ham. In praising the player who earned his side three points, Arsene Wenger said: "[Song] came here as a centre-back, became a defensive midfielder, now [he] slowly becomes a striker." "We've only got one Song," chorused the Arsenal fans.

Lee Westwood
England's Westwood has become the best golfer in the world thus ending Tiger Woods' 281-week reign as number one. Martin Kaymer needed a top-two finish at Valderrama this weekend to top the list himself but ended well off the lead at seven over.
"It's a dream, everyone has to say there is nobody better than me at the moment," said Westwood, "You have to say it's a highlight. It's a great honour and a big responsibility."

BAD WEEK

Mark Clattenburg
The referee was at the centre of controversy at Old Trafford on Saturday. The chaos ensued when Nani fell to the ground looking for a penalty but no spot-kick was given. Heurelho Gomes, Tottenham's goalkeeper, then picked up the ball and placed it on the ground ahead of him thinking it was a free-kick but no set-piece had been assigned. Nani walked forward and saw the stationary ball before passing it into the net.
