Fresh from watching the success of Britain's athletes during the week, former Olympic coach Frank Dick told Five Live's Sportsweek on Sunday morning that mentoring was crucial in cultivating champions.

"UK Athletics has made a quantum leap forward," said Dick, who expounded about the value of coaches, like Jessica Ennis' Tony Minichiello, in the making of a medallist.

"For example," Dick continued. "Let's imagine a young person coming into the broadcasting business and working with you [David Davis, the presenter]. There are so many things that you pass on to other people because you have these gut feelings."

From broadcasting to a battling for a medal, the mantra is mentoring.

Heptathlon Champion Jessica Ennis revealed that the former sprinter had used the power of poetry to help drive the British team to triumph.

"He read a couple of poems just before I did my team speech, which was brilliant," Ennis revealed. "It was really inspirational."

Albeit only a friendly, Wigan were humbled by Blue Square Premier League side Chester City 4-0 on Sunday. Goals from Michael Wilde, Oliver Ryan, Rob Hopley and Captain George Horan ensured Chester walked away with pride – if not any points – at the Deva Stadium.

It's therefore back to the drawing board for Athletic as they begin their Premier League campaign in two weeks' time.

Arsene Wenger's eyebrows
Furious with the new 25-names-in-each-squad rule now imposed on each Premier League side, Arsenal's manager must have furrowed his brow on more than one occasion at the weekend.
