Rose attributed his turn in form to his accuracy on Muirfield's greens. He explained: "I had a new putting routine this week where I've been coming into the putt a lot more open with my body, which I guess is allowing me to see the left to right break much easier.
"I've got to be honest, the putting is one part of my game where I have had some slight doubts. But my last round was fantastic because I felt like I putted my best under pressure."
That will be music to the ears of Montgomerie who will need his players to respond to pressure at Celtic Manor. And Rose admitted he has now circled the date of the match in his diary.
He said: "Before this week, I was so far out of making the team that it wasn't really worth focusing on. But I had said that if I do get close to getting into the team then I'd adjust my schedule to make the team, because it is something that is important to me."
Rose could not afford big celebrations. Such was his form ahead of the Memorial that he had not qualified for next week's US Open at Pebble Beach, so later today he was facing a 36-hole sectional qualifier.
Tiger Woods, the defending Memorial champion, hit three spectators on the way to carding a final round of 72. That left the world No1 six under for the tournament, 12 shots behind Rose.
