Alcopop, the 4-1 favourite, could finish only sixth after Warringah, formerly trained by Sir Michael Stoute, led the field until the home straight but was swallowed up by Crime Scene.
However, Shocking got the better of a tussle with Crime Scene, much to the delight of his rider Corey Brown, who had been beaten a nose on Cumani's Bauer in the race 12 months ago.
Bin Suroor, who now heads to California for Saturday's Breeders' Cup, said: "So close again - we will come back and win it one day, maybe next year."
