Godfrey sets sights on gold

Larry Godfrey today qualified for the semi-finals of the men's archery on his first appearance at the Olympic Games.

The British champion won 110-108 in the tense 12-arrow eliminator agsint Chen Szu Yuan of Chinese Taipei. He will now face Italian Marco Galiazzo in a bid to reach the final.

He is seeking Britain's second archery medal in as many days and is certain of a chance to play for at least a bronze.

The quarter-final match went down to the final arrow, with the scores tied at 101. Godfrey had edged the first end 29-27 with two bullseyes to Chen's one, but the scores were level at half way. Chen then scored a maximum 30 points from his next three arrows as Godfrey slipped three points behind. Then Chen faltered, with 22 points from a possible 30 and Godfrey shot 27 for a place in the last four.

Meanwhile Alison Williamson today hinted she could go to Beijing for her fifth Olympics in 2008 and one last shot at gold, after finally tasting medal glory.

The trainee teacher won an archery bronze yesterday with a last-arrow win over Chinese Taipei's Shun Chi Yuan.

She will be 36 if she goes to China but she: "It's not necessarily a young person's sport and if I didn't compete in another Olympics it wouldn't be an age decision, it would be a lifestyle decision."

Although she is Lottery funded, Williamson still faces a struggle to stay competitive and admitted: "About a year ago I thought Athens would be the end of the road for me. But this year I have had some bigger results so I still think maybe there's more to come. There have been times since Sydney when I contemplated whether it's worth it, and yes it is!"
