Giles: I will tour Zimbabwe

England spinner Ashley Giles rejected an offer to miss England's controversial winter one-day tour to Zimbabwe in a show of solidarity with captain Michael Vaughan.

Giles's decision was the one surprise today, as the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced their 14-man squad to play five one-day internationals in Zimbabwe in November.

Andrew Flintoff and Marcus Trescothick accepted the ECB's offer to miss the tour for " cricketing reasons". They join fast bowler Steve Harmison, who pulled out earlier this month citing moral objections against travelling to Robert Mugabe's brutal regime.

Giles was the third senior England player given the opportunity to miss the trip but he said: "I felt it was important to support Michael Vaughan and the rest of the squad. I also believed there were compelling cricketing reasons for me to go as I have now secured a regular place in our one-day side and I am keen to retain my place."

Batsman Andrew Strauss, who has admitted to deep moral concerns over the tour, is included but could still withdraw later on.

England's selectors have also called up four previously uncapped players at one-day international-level, Ian Bell, Matthew Prior, Simon Jones and the South African-born Kevin Pietersen. The 24-year-old has just qualified to play for England after completing the four-year residency qualification period.
