Gerrard 'will stay for life'

Rafael Benitez today revealed his ambition for Steven Gerrard to play for Liverpool for life as his Captain Marvel prepared to sign a new contract for the European champions.

Gerrard, the inspiration behind arguably the most thrilling comeback triumph in football history, was so exultant about his part in the epic victory over AC Milan that he spent the night here in Istanbul with the giant European Cup lying beside him in bed.

Liverpool boss Benitez, confirming his belief that Gerrard will sign a new contract after the speculation about a move to Chelsea, said: "Now I think Steven will be happy and I am sure he will play well for us next season and, perhaps, for 10 seasons more."

The England midfielder is 25 next week, so Benitez's dream would see him finish his career at Anfield.

Gerrard will start talks with Benitez and Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry when he returns to the city, with speculation that his new contract could be worth in the region of £100,000 a week.

Benitez admitted for the first time today that he believed his captain's form had been affected by all the talk about a possible move. "I think it was one of the reasons we did not do so well in the Premiership," he said.

"When people were talking about Real Madrid and Chelsea, it was difficult for Steven but he has done a fantastic job."

Gerrard, whose name was sung long and loud into the night by the 48,000 Liverpool fans here, said: "How can I leave after a night like this? My form has been hot and cold and I have had a stressful season but we will see a different player next year."

Parry said: "We have always felt the key was that he could fulfil his ambitions at Liverpool. There was a dilemma for him last summer, which we can understand, but our message was stick with it and let's see what happens.

"Well, look what has happened - it shows he made the right decision in staying."

Gerrard could not be parted from the trophy last night. Fellow goal scorer Vladimir Smicer joked: "He didn't have his girlfriend with him, so he had the cup in his bed instead."

Parry added: "I don't think he has let go of it. We'll have to see if he gets to take it down his local pub."

This would follow a Liverpool tradition established by Phil Thompson, who took the cup to his local in Kirkby after the club last won the European Cup, in 1984.

Benitez and his triumphant squad are expected to fly into Liverpool's John Lennon airport this afternoon ahead of a victory parade.
