Games of tight security

Unprecedented security measures have been put in place for VIPs and Olympic officials attending the Athens Games.

Greek police and military have barricaded off the Hilton Hotel in the centre of the city where International Olympic Committee chiefs, sponsors and dignitaries are staying.

Scores of guards have been stationed at four points around the security ring and only people with special passes are allowed into the hotel. The "ring of steel" is so large that it has spread onto the lanes of the roads outside which are usually very busy. Traffic has been drastically reduced in the area.

All vehicles delivering goods are also undergoing full checks for bombs and explosives before they are allowed near the hotel's back entrance.

The secret services of Britain and America have been involved in preparations for the Games. Undercover police from both countries are set to guard athletes in public places.
