Furious Staff could quit cycling

Staff was favourite to win the keirin after he took the world title in Australia earlier this season.

But the 31-year-old from Kent was thrown out of the race, won by Australia's Ryan Bayley, after officials claimed he made a dangerous manoeuvre during the semi-final. Staff insisted: "I was just protecting my line. Keirin in Japanese means 'fight' and you've got to get aggressive, you've got to take control of the race and go out there and win.

"I'm desperately disappointed. I don't know where I go from here. I'll take a holiday and when I come back I'll see if the passion is still there. If it's not, I'll do something else."

Bradley Wiggins and Rob Hayles claimed bronze in the madison behind Australia and Switzerland. Wiggins, who had already won gold in the individual pursuit and silver in the team pursuit, became the first British Olympian to win a gold, silver and bronze since Mary Rand in 1964.
