Frank worry over signings

Frank Lampard admitted today that continued speculation about new Chelsea signings is unsettling some of the players.

Chelsea, who beat Newcastle on penalties to win the Asia Cup here yesterday, were again linked with a renewed attempt to sign Manchester United's Juan Veron. Lampard, who scored a penalty in the shoot-out, said: "It is unsettling for the players. Most of the positions in the team have been mentioned in connection with a new player coming in and that does have an effect.

"Of course it's good to have quality players connected with moves to Chelsea and I know central midfield is one of the areas of priority. We're a bit short there at the moment and I'm looking forward to having someone come in and play alongside me. It will be good when everything is settled and the squad is finalised.

"There have been plenty of names mentioned. Veron is one and he is certainly a top quality player and Emerson is another who has been mentioned. Personally all the speculation just spurs me on. "I only had about three weeks off during the summer and I've never felt so fit at this stage. Competition for places can affect different players in different ways but I enjoy the challenge."

Chelsea's bid to sign Veron could be back on if they improve their offer to the Argentine midfield star. Although United manager Sir Alex Ferguson says he is happy for Veron to stay it is believed that an offer of around £15million would persuade United to part with the man who cost them £28m three years ago.

Chelsea coach Claudio Ranieri remains keen on Veron but the player's own demands could still prove the major obstacle. An initial inquiry stalled because he wanted £95,000 a week.
