Forssell: Loan spell can win me Chelsea place

Mikael Forssell said today that he will use his time at Birmingham to make a point to Chelsea.

The striker has been released from Stamford Bridge on a four-month loan deal. His move to St Andrews, after similar deals with Crystal Palace and Germany's Borussia Moenchengladbach, suggests Chelsea would be prepared to sell him.

But they signed Forssell on a new four-year contract this summer and the Finland international is a little confused ahead of his Birmingham debut against Fulham on Sunday.

He said: "I have got a chance to impress Birmingham and make a point to Chelsea. Every game I play I try to make a point to everybody. Obviously I want to play for Chelsea and I don't give up. I will get there in the end.

"It is all a bit strange because I signed a new contract just before I left, which is what they wanted so they could be sure I would be going back."

Forssell was one of the most coveted young strikers in Europe when he joined Chelsea from HJK Helsinki five years ago.

Since then the 22-year-old has made only six league starts for the club and now has to compete with established stars Hernan Crespo, Adrian Mutu, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Eidur Gudjohnsen. But he is determined to prove he is good enough for the Premiership.

Forssell, who scored in a 1-1 draw against Wales on Wednesday, said: "Maybe I was a bit unlucky at Chelsea. It looked good for me in the summer but then all the new players came in.
