Meanwhile, Germany coach Joachim Low is expected to announce Philipp Lahm as his new captain later today after regular skipper Michael Ballack was ruled out of the World Cup as a result of Kevin-Prince Boateng's crude challenge on the Chelsea midfielder in the FA Cup final.

Low held a meeting with the Bayern Munich full-back yesterday to discuss the appointment but former Germany goalkeeper Oliver Kahn, who played alongside Lahm both for club and country, does not believe that the 26-year-old is the right choice to lead his country.

"You have a huge responsibility as captain of the national team and the player who wears the armband must always lead the way," Kahn told Munich's Tz newspaper.

"Lahm still has to prove whether he has the leadership qualities for the whole tournament.

"A World Cup is very long and there are tough phases. As captain of the team, you must always be positive and courageous.

"Philipp is a great footballer but I don't know whether he is mature enough for this."

Meanwhile, Nigeria's World Cup preparations suffered a further setback yesterday when Luton announced their warm-up game against Colombia would not take place at Kenilworth Road.

Nigeria had been due to play the South Americans at Upton Park on Sunday but West Ham pulled out on Monday.

The Africans acted quickly to move the game to Luton but a statement on the club's website said a carnival had already been planned for the same day, making it difficult to police both events.

Nigeria have now approached MK Dons about the possibility of hosting the game. As well as the cancellation of other friendly matches, Nigeria's World Cup build-up has been disrupted by the abandonment of a training camp in London.
