West Ham and Millwall go into extra time

West Ham and Millwall were today given an extra week to answer Football Association charges over the crowd trouble that marred their Carling Cup tie on 25 August.

The FA, who are investigating the violent clashes and pitch invasions at Upton Park, cited the 'enormity of the case' as the reason for granting the extension.

The extra time will allow legal teams from both clubs to mount their defence as West Ham fight four charges and Millwall three. Both clubs are alleged to have taken insufficient action to stop missile throwing and violent, threatening and racist behaviour during the game, which West Ham won 3-1 after extra-time.

The Hammers face a further charge of failing to ensure their supporters did not enter the pitch.

An FA spokesman said: "The clubs were due to respond today. Both clubs requested and were granted an extension of seven days.

"It's not uncommon and they have the right given the enormity of the case, so it is right and proper."
