Sagna’s contract ran out at the end of the season and although Arsenal told him they would increase his £70,000-a-week wages they were unable to match the £120,000 a week on offer from City.

As a result the free agent signed for City on a three-year deal, angering many Gunners fans.

But speaking after playing for France in their 0-0 World Cup draw with Ecuador last night, the left-back said: “I’m going to clear everything up because I keep reading that I did it for money and I’m greedy.

“What I want to say is I stayed with Arsenal with the same contract since 2008 and I never asked for more money. For people who think it’s for money, it’s not. I just wanted to change. I needed a boost in my career and I think it was about time.”

City today completed the £12million signing of Porto’s Brazilian midfielder Fernando.
