A rampant Netherlands humiliated reigning World Cup champions Spain 5-1, with Robin van Persie and Arjen Robben each scoring twice.

Spain went ahead in the Group B clash after 27 minutes through a Xabi Alonso penalty but van Persie equalised with a stunning header on the stroke of half-time.

After the interval, the Dutch ran riot and quick-fire goals from Arjen Robben and defender Stefan de Vrij left the Spanish shell-shocked and 3-1 behind.

Further goals from van Persie and Robben completed the scoring as the Netherlands completed a famous victory that may signal the beginning of the end for this great Spanish side.
