With Rangers so bad, it was hard to gauge just how good Fulham were. QPR centre-half Anton Ferdinand had been touted as a player to watch by Warnock but was part of a collective back-four mess-up for Johnson's opener in 79 seconds and then saw his attempted block turn into goal No3 on 37 minutes with the striker again cashing in.

In between those goals, a senseless challenge on Johnson by goalkeeper Paddy Kenny gave Murphy his penalty.

For the fourth, every QPR defender went to sleep when John Arne Riise slipped a free-kick to the unchallenged Johnson to score. The hat-trick hero provided the centre for Dempsey to make it 5-0 before Ferdinand's lacklustre challenge left Zamora with an easy chance to make it six on 74 minutes.

Fulham manager Martin Jol joked about Johnson's scoring feats in the past, as he said: "When I was at Spurs he hit 20 goals for Crystal Palace and everyone was after him. Only little negative was that he had 10 penalties as well because he was always falling over! I told him he is capable of 12 to 15 goals and I think he will prove me right."

Jol was more serious when responding to a Sunday newspaper story which claimed Zamora had stormed off the training ground following a clash with the Dutchman.

The row was said to have happened in the build-up to Thursday's Europa League tie with Odense, a match which the striker missed through illness.

Though denying there had been a confrontation, Jol said: "Bobby is a sensitive person. Sometimes you leave him out. If he's ill in bed you can't expect me to take him [to Odense]. And maybe he doesn't like that. That could be the case."
