Despite having much of the first-half possession, it was Bayern Munich who were caught out when Karim Benzema finished off an impressive breakaway move from the hosts.

Fabio Coentrao sent in a perfect low cross for the unmarked Benzema who side-footed Madrid ahead inside 19 minutes.

Flu-suffering Gareth Bale came off the bench against the advice of the club's medical staff as the second period wore on but he couldn't help Madrid extend their narrow lead.
