Rachel Yankey has dreams of a London final

Arsenal midfielder Rachel Yankey says it would be massive for her side to overcome Wolfsburg and reach the Champions League Final at Stamford Bridge.

The men’s side exited from the Champions League at the last 16 to German opposition in the shape of Bayern Munich.

However, Arsenal Ladies are undefeated this season and Yankey is optimistic her side will progress from the semi-final, the first leg of which kicks off at Boreham Wood FC on Sunday at 2pm.

Yankey (below) said: “We’re confident. We know it will be a really tough game. Any German team you come up against you know they will be tough to break down, rigid and hard to beat. Hopefully, this can be a good year for us.”

Yankey’s side won the competition in 2007 but they have lost in the semi‑finals in the last three seasons.

The England player hopes to go one better this year and the prospect of a final in her home town adds extra spice.

“It would be massive for us to reach the final,” said Yankey. “There are some players left from the 2007 team that are still playing and remember what it was like to win it; I’m sure the younger players are sick of hearing us talk about it. There’s added excitement that it’s at Stamford Bridge. It would be amazing to get to that final and win it again.”
