QPR’s Massimo Luongo: Leaving Tottenham was the right move for me

“If I hadn’t taken that step, I’d have kept doing the same thing at Spurs and gone out on loan again. Who knows whether I would have ever got a chance? Ryan and Harry were able to use loans to eventually get to play in the Premier League but I am trying to do it a different way by coming through the lower leagues.

“They inspire me, Ryan probably the most. We were closer and I still talk to him. He didn’t have the most success going out on loan, he had injuries. But he stuck with it and got there.

“So he did it his way, I’m doing it mine. As long as you get games, that’s the most important thing. It would be ideal to help get QPR promoted and take them on. It would be great for all of us to be on the pitch together again.”

Luongo’s wish could take some time to fulfil, following QPR’s massive transformation since being relegated last term. The 22-year-old is one of 11 arrivals this summer, while many experienced players have gone, with Charlie Austin, Rob Green and Matt Phillips also set to depart.

Inevitably it will take time for the new squad to settle. QPR have earned just a point from their opening two games as they head to Wolves tonight.

But Luongo is convinced the club are in safe hands thanks to manager Chris Ramsey and director of football Les Ferdinand, both of whom oversaw his career in the academy at Tottenham. He added: “They were a big reason why I joined [QPR] because I knew they could develop my game.

“I haven’t noticed many changes from when they were my coaches at Spurs. They have been forced to be a bit more strict and show who’s boss but I still see the chilled side — they are people you can talk to. You are not afraid of them like other managers I have had.

“The thought of getting relegated again is something everyone dreads at QPR. But if we listen to them [Les and Chris], I’m sure we will be fine.”
