Millwall determined Cup dreams won't disrupt promotion chase

Millwall's management want the team to push aside any dreams of FA Cup glory and focus instead on the ultimate aim of promotion to the Championship - despite progressing to the Cup's third round last night.

Striker Steve Morison inspired the Lions to an easy win over Blue Square South side Staines, scoring the first and then setting up Jack Smith for the second. Late strikes from Alan Dunne and Danny Schofield were then enough to secure a third-round tie with Derby in the New Year.

Manager Kenny Jackett was not present for the victory due to flu so assistant Joe Gallen took charge on the night to ensure there was no embarrassing Cup upset.

But he also played down any hopes fans may have of rekindling happy memories of an FA Cup run all the way to Wembley.

Millwall reached the Final in 2004, where they then lost 4-0 to Manchester United in the days when the Final was played at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.

Gallen realises that to mirror anything like that campaign would be a fantastic financial boost for the League One outfit, yet he remains realistic in assessing the side's aim for the coming months.

He said: "There is no doubt that everyone's focus is on trying to get promotion, that's it. These games against the likes of Staines are when you think, 'I daren't lose this one', and we then look for a big draw because financially it is important that you progress.
