Millwall charged over alleged racist chanting at FA Cup win over Everton

Millwall have been charged by the Football Association after racist chants were allegedly heard during their FA Cup match with Everton.

Fans used a racist term that is derogatory to the Pakistani community during the game at The Den.

The chants followed fights with rival fans before the fourth round tie on January 26. Millwall have now been charged by the FA for the chants.

A statement by the FA read: “It is alleged the club failed to ensure its spectators conducted themselves in an orderly fashion and refrained from using abusive and/or insulting words, which included a reference to race and/or ethnic origin, during the Emirates FA Cup tie against Everton on 26 January 2019.” An independent commission will decide the sanctions that Millwall could face. The club have vowed to ban supporters for life if they are found guilty of such abuse.

A statement after the Everton match read: “Millwall Football Club is aware of, and extremely disappointed by, a video circulating online displaying alleged racist chanting.

“The club will, as is commonplace following such incidents, work with all relevant authorities during investigations into the matter and look to identify individuals involved.

“The club would like to place on record its gratitude to, and pride in, the vast majority of its supporters who gave their team outstanding backing throughout the match and who deserve to enjoy a memorable victory.

“They should be able to do so without being tarnished by behaviour they would find abhorrent.

“Millwall Football Club has a long and proud record of anti-discrimination work and on top of this investigation will continue to work tirelessly, alongside the authorities, to eradicate all forms from the game.”

Chelsea face the threat of a part stadium closure or a ban on travelling fans after anti-Semitic chants were heard in the Europa League. The chants occurred during the match against MOL Vidi and the club are due to hear UEFA’s judgment on February 28.
