Spurs could offer him plenty of minutes in the second half of the season, even after Dominic Solanke returns to fitness, and if they could sign him permanently or on loan with an option, he would be another exciting young player on the club's books.

But for all his obvious talent, Tel is just 19 and it would be unfair to expect a player who has started just nine top-flight matches to immediately transform Spurs' season.

“With our current situation, the last thing I want to do is throw in another young player,” head coach Ange Postecoglou said on Wednesday.

Ultimately, Tel would have to be considered another investment for Spurs rather than a short-term solution.
