Martin Jol’s relief as Fulham escape

Martin Jol praised Fulham after they survived a scare at Burton, where the hosts “smelt blood”.

Fulham looked comfortable with the first-half lead given to them by Adel Taarabt but Burton equalised with five minutes of normal time to go and then took the lead in extra‑time before Hugo Rodallega made it 2-2 in the 117th minute.

In the shoot-out, Fulham’s David Stockdale saved Jack Dyer’s effort, allowing John Arne Riise to send the visitors through 5-4.

Fulham boss Jol said: “It could have been a bad night for us. The crowd smelt blood but we showed character and responded and it turned out nice in the end.

“I am pleased with the resilience of my squad, they showed that they wanted to get through.”
