City had the better of the first half, but were unable to find the breakthrough, as the visitors’ defence held firm.

Manuel Pellegrini’s team then suffered a major setback after 65 minutes when Pablo Zabaleta was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Chelsea sensed the game was there for the taking, and went ahead just six minutes later when substitute Andre Schurrle tapped home Eden Hazard’s inch-perfect cross.

But with 85 minutes on the clock, Lampard popped up with a trademark burst from deep to volley home James Milner’s pass, and secure his team an invaluable point.
