Jay Rodriguez: Tottenham target signs new Southampton contract

Southampton forward Jay Rodriguez has put an end to speculation linking him with a move away from St.Mary’s by signing a new four year deal with the club.

Despite being sidelined for the past 13 months, Rodriguez has attracted interest from Premier League rivals Tottenham, with former Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino keen to work with the England international once again.

But the former Burnley star has put to bed talk of a summer exit, committing his future to south coast club by extending his current deal until 2019.

Although the England international is yet to play a competitive game under new manager Ronald Koeman, the Dutchman was quick to recognise his importance to the squad and is delighted that he has opted to stay at the club.

In a statement released by the club, Koeman said: “This is very good news for the club because there was some speculation about Jay and interest from other big clubs, so it is a compliment to the club that we have an agreement.

“It has been a difficult time for Jay who has been doing everything to come back in a good shape.

“It’s a good start to the summer business for us because it shows that everyone here is convinced by what we want to achieve.”
