It feels like a defeat, says Chris Smalling

Chris Smalling today claimed Manchester United's Champions League draw at Marseille last night felt more like a loss.

The former Fulham defender impressed in his first knock-out match in Europe's premier club competition but was concerned with his team's display.

"It feels like we lost the game," said the 21-year-old. "Everyone in the dressing room was a bit dejected.

"It just didn't quite click; our passing was a bit off throughout. We didn't test their goalkeeper enough.

"Hopefully we can finish the job; we've been quite immense at Old Trafford this season."

Despite his disappointment, Smalling enjoyed the experience.

"To come and play in an atmosphere at a stadium like the Stade Velodrome was intimidating. I'd heard it was a great atmosphere and it's a great occasion for me to come and play in," he said.

The fixture saw the return of playmaker Mathieu Valbuena, described by United boss Alex Ferguson as Marseille's best player.
