Is switching to a new ground always a success?

Within eight years of moving to the Liberty Stadium, Swansea have gone from being newly-promoted in League One to a League Cup-winning Premier League outfit.

When the Swans qualified for the top tier in 2011, their end-of-year debt levels were just £800,000, compared to £16.8m and £53.9m at fellow risers, Norwich and QPR.

Relegated just three months before moving from Filbert Street to the King Power Stadium in 2002, average attendances increased by nearly 10,000 at the new venue, bringing in significant ticketing revenue. At the end of the first season they returned to the top flight but stayed there for only one season.

The Gunners may not have picked up a trophy since they left Highbury in 2006 but, off the pitch, they have been a success story. In their first season at the Emirates, gate and other match-day revenues more than doubled from £44m to £91m. In 2012 Arsenal announced a pre-tax profit of £36.6m.

Moved to the Stadium of Light at the old Wearmouth Colliery off the back of Premier League relegation in 1997. Within two years they were back in the top flight, where they have spent 11 out of the last 14 seasons. In 2011 Sunderland recorded a £27.9m pre-tax loss, having splashed out £65.4m on recruitment to ensure safety.

When Hull moved to the KC Stadium in 2002 they began a charge up the leagues, moving from the bottom tier to the top flight in five seasons. Their accountants, Deloitte, warned that Hull could struggle to cover liabilities if relegated. They dropped out of the top flight in 2010 and were taken over with debts in the region of £35m.
