FIFA presidential candidate Chung Mong-joon drags Prince William and David Cameron into voting probe row

FIFA presidential candidate Dr Chung Mong-joon has attacked charges against him and embroiled Prince William and David Cameron in a row over the awarding of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

The South Korean businessman has been accused of making an illicit agreement with FA chief executive Geoff Thompson in which they agreed to back each other’s bids for the tournament.

However Chung, who was speaking at the Leaders in Sport Business Summit 2015, claimed that Sepp Blatter is leading a campaign to discredit his prospective presidency, labelling the incumbent “a hypocrite and a liar”.

He strenuously denied FIFA's accusation, claiming that he had met Thompson in the presence of the Prime Minister and Prince William.

“Geoff Thompson is my friend but I don’t understand why he said that,” Chung said. “Thompson and the Investigatory Chamber sent me a transcript, the whole contents looked very incoherent.

“According to the transcript Thompson said I was at the meeting with Prime Minister Cameron, but actually the meeting was held in Prince William’s room at his request. There was myself, four ambassadors, Cameron and Thompson. Do you think it is possible to have illicit vote trading in such company? If they think so, FIFA should try all those people.

“I understand why Thompson made that allegation. England only got two votes and Thompson needed a scapegoat.”
