FIFA look at giving teams more points for winning

FIFA will look at changing the system of three points for a win and one for a draw.

In response to criticisms that teams at the World Cup were too defensive, FIFA president Sepp Blatter has asked Task Force Football 2014 to look at ways of making matches more entertaining.

Six of the 48 group matches in South Africa ended in goal-less draws and Blatter said today that the issue must be looked at.

"At the moment three points are awarded for a win and one for a draw, which is something we can discuss and decide whether it's a good thing or not," he said.

Blatter also wants the Task Force to find alternatives to extra-time and penalties, the current methods of deciding drawn cup fixtures.

He even raised the possibility of reintroducing the golden goal, which was used between 1993 and 2004 and proved decisive in the finals of Euro '96 and Euro 2000.

Blatter said: "Is extra-time the only option we have when a game ends in a draw? Is it worth taking another look at the golden goal? Some people like it, some don't."

The Task Force includes current and former players and referees and their suggestions will be debated by FIFA and could be used at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
