Phil Jagielka has withdrawn from the England squad after suffering a thigh injury.

The Football Association confirmed that no replacement would be named for the Everton centre-back, with John Stones, Chris Smalling, Michael Keane and Gary Cahill all available to Gareth Southgate.

Jagielka, 34, last featured for England in March as a substitute in the friendly defeat to Holland and was to miss the 23 for Euro 2016. Sam Allardyce restored him to the squad for his only game in charge.

The Everton centre-back has started all of his club’s Premier League matches this season. His club confirmed that Jagielka’s injury “isn’t too serious and Jags will return to Everton to be assessed.”

England’s new interim manager Southgate had already suffered several withdrawals from his first squad, with Raheem Sterling and Glen Johnson dropping out in the week to be replaced by Andros Townsend and Keane.

Southgate will make his Wembley bow at home to Malta on Saturday night in a World Cup qualifier.
