England came from behind against Slovenia to continue their perfect start to their Euro 2016 qualification campaign as Wayne Rooney marked his one-hundredth cap with a goal.

Having failed to take advantage of their dominance for the opening hour, England were shocked as Jordan Henderson headed into his own goal after 57 minutes to give the visitors the lead.

But Wayne Rooney was not to be denied on his big night as he burst into the penalty area and had his ankles clipped from behind leaving the referee no choice but to point to the spot.

The captain dusted himself off to smash his penalty pass Samir Handanovic in the Slovenian goal and from that moment on England didn’t look back.

Danny Welbeck put England ahead with a volley from close range before sealing the victory with a cool finish after a fine one-two with Raheem Sterling.

Although Hodgson might be worried that it took his side going a goal down for them to play with the sort of intensity required to get past their opponents, he will be happy with the way they responded to their first real adversity of the group stages.
