Fulham were today being linked with a move for their former striker Clint Dempsey

Dempsey, who plays for Seattle Sounders, has been trying to negotiate a two-month loan deal during the Major League Soccer off-season.

Dempsey spent five-and-a-half years at Craven Cottage before joining Tottenham in a £6million deal in the summer of 2012.

Spurs sold Dempsey, 30, for a similar fee to Seattle Sounders after just one season at White Hart Lane.

The new MLS season does not start until March 8 and Seattle general manager Adrian Hanauer admitted earlier this week that a loan move for Dempsey was “likely”.

Former boss Martin Jol was criticised for his apparent reluctance to promote young players into the first-team set-up.

Fulham have a number of talented academy players — including Moussa Dembele, Buomesca Tue Na Banga, Chris David and Patrick Roberts — and the club are currently top of the Premier League Under-21 division.

Meulensteen said: “Enormous credit to the academy because they do things right. The key is making sure you create a pathway for those players to come through.”
