Chris Waddle gave me a masterclass in Cup, says Danny Murphy

How do you tackle a game like this when you’re playing for the weaker side? Of course, a young player will want to impress on a bigger stage.

I remember playing for Crewe against Sheffield Wednesday in two League Cup matches in 1995. Chris Waddle was coming to the end of his career and played in central midfield for Wednesday. We drew the first game 2-2 and I did well against Waddle, but he put on a masterclass in the second leg. We lost 5-2 and I couldn’t get close to him. It was a reality check for an 18-year-old.

But Peterborough must remember to enjoy it. Two years ago, League One Bradford won 4-2 at Chelsea in the FA Cup at the fourth-round stage. Whatever happens in those players’ careers, they will always have that day. This time it might be Peterborough’s turn.

Sutton vs AFC Wimbledon

This is a good tie for Sutton, who are 14th in the National League. It is a local derby against a side two levels above them.

But with all respect to AFC Wimbledon, of League One, this is not Sutton’s dream draw. Their objective is to get some publicity, get a good result — and then draw one of the big boys in the fourth round.

Many of us will remember probably the greatest day in Sutton’s history, when they beat Coventry 2-1 in a third-round tie in January 1989. Sutton were playing at the same level as they are today, while Coventry were in the top flight.

If Sutton can get past Wimbledon, they will start to wonder whether history might repeat itself.
