Arsenal v Monaco: Player Ratings

Standard Sport assesses the individual performances from Arsenal's Champions League clash with Monaco at the Emirates.

Arsenal are just 90 minutes away from failing to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the fifth season running after losing their round of 16 first leg 3-1 at home to Monaco.

It was a disastrous night for Arsene Wenger as goals from Geoffrey Kondogbia, former Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov and Yannick Ferreira-Carrasco all but sealed the Gunner’s fate. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s goal late on is all the north London club have to cling on to.

The Gunners started brightly with Santi Cazorla impressing when he charged into the Monaco half from his deep-lying central midfield position.

But despite enjoying the majority of possession it was the French side who chose to take risks and they were rewarded for their endeavour on 38 minutes. Influential playmaker Joao Moutinho took control of the ball after Danny Welbeck lost it near the halfway line. Moutinho played the ball into the feet of Geoffrey Kondogbia and he cracked a left-footed effort from 25 yards which took a deflection off Per Mertesacker before flying past the helpless David Ospina.

Arsenal were punished for not taking their chances. In total they had 14 shots but were not clinical in front of goal and Monaco were happy to punish them.
