"I'm not applying. I'm with the England side. England have been very good to me, the England cricket team has been very good to me and as far as I'm concerned, I'm with the England cricket team.
"I'm very happy to be so - and I'll be very happy if we go on and win this one-day series against South Africa."
One of questions that Fletcher has to answer if England are to win the series, which continues in East London tomorrow, is whether the idea of using Geraint Jones as an opener and Andrew Strauss at No 4 is working.
Strauss has made a sensational start to his Test career, but instead of opening with him in one-day cricket as well, England have given the Middlesex left-hander a vital middle-order role - with mixed results.
"It's a learning curve for me," admitted Strauss. "But I think it's a role I can play and I enjoy playing it.
He is also backing the man who replaces him at the top of the order in the one-day game: "Geraint's not going to become an Adam Gilchrist overnight. But I think potentially it could be an excellent move if he's just given a bit of time to settle."
