Fighter Khan turns peacemaker

Amir Khan, Britain's only Olympic boxer, has moved to quell a coaching row that threatened to undermine his medal prospects.

Khan has been honed into one of the country's brightest prospects by Mick Jelley, veteran coach at Bury ABC. But Jelley won't be in Khan's corner on Monday when the teenage sensation begins his quest for gold in the lightweight division. His place will be taken by Terry Edwards, GB boxing's team leader. Only one trainer can work in a corner and the national coach takes precedence.

Jelley was furious at a perceived snub. "Amir's my lad," he said. "It's been all my hard work. Mr Edwards is going to be in the corner while I'm 50 rows back."

World junior champion Khan, 17, displayed great maturity to ease tensions in his camp.

"I think I would have done better if Mick was in my corner," he said. "But I've got a good team behind me."
