FIFA chief wants to axe draws

FIFA president Sepp Blatter today called for the abolition of draws to ensure every game of football has an outright winner.

In an idea that would revolutionise the game, Blatter has suggested that all matches should be decided by a penalty shoot-out if the scores are level after 90 minutes.

FIFA have no immediate plans to introduce such a change, but the world governing body's president believes the radical step would be a major improvement on the existing laws.

He said: "Every game should have a winner. When you play cards or any other game, there's always a winner and a loser. We should have the courage to introduce a final decision in every game of football.

"Penalties remain the best way to decide a game in the case of a draw but if anybody has a better idea, I am ready to listen to it.

"We can't be satisfied with draws. (Modern Olympic Games founder) Pierre de Coubertin has said that the important thing was to take part, not to win. That's not true.
