Ferguson: We're right on target for title

Alex Ferguson today warned title rivals Arsenal and Chelsea that Manchester United are traditionally at their strongest in the second half of the season.

The defending champions are now a point clear of the two London clubs at the top of the Premiership table after beating Tottenham 2-1 at White Hart Lane yesterday.

"Historically, we've always shown our determination in the second half of the season," said the United manager.

"It's not going to be easy but I think the players are ready. The important thing is to be there at the turn of the year."

Ferguson decided to play Rio Ferdinand yesterday and claimed that he would continue picking him until his eight month suspension begins on January 12.

If United decide to appeal against the severity of the ban to the Football Association they could continue selecting Ferdinand until the appeal process is exhausted. That could last at least another month and could be extended further if they then decide to mount a legal action.

"I felt Rio acquitted himself well against Spurs in the circumstances," said Ferguson. "He merits his position in the team because of his performances. He and Mikael Silvestre have formed a great partnership. With those two and Tim Howard we've got a great backbone, so why should I change it?"

Spurs manager David Pleat wasn't surprised by the selection of Ferdinand, who was jeered by sections of the Tottenham fans.

"It was a typical Alex ploy to suggest he might not play and then say to him 'go on, son, you're going to have to face everyone before long so go out and do it now'," he said.

"The booing? What do you expect them to do? Cheer him? That's just down to the tribalism of football."
