"He assured me he wasn't trying to pick on me on purpose, that he wasn't treating me any differently than he was the other players. It didn't feel like that but I didn't have any choice but to take the gaffer at his word.
"I stood up and went to walk out of the office. The gaffer said in that half-joking, slightly sarcastic way he has: 'Come here and shake my hand before you start crying.'
"I didn't feel like crying. I'm not sure it felt like the time to shake hands either, but I did. I left feeling that nothing had been resolved, that nothing had really changed."
Previously Beckham's mum Sandra had also confronted Ferguson to find out the reasons behind the pair's dispute. She was told by Ferguson: "The trouble with David is that everyone sucks up to him now."
Tensions between Ferguson and Beckham continued to mount, climaxing in the United dressing room following their FA Cup defeat by Arsenal. A furious Ferguson lashed out at a stray boot which hit Beckham, cutting him just above the left eye.
At the time, Ferguson was castigated for not issuing a public apology, but Beckham today confirmed Standard Sport's exclusive at the time that Ferguson said sorry immediately after the incident.
Beckham said: "I got dressed and started to leave. As I got to the door, the gaffer was there and said: 'I'm sorry I didn't mean to do that.'"
